Conservatives Support Gay Pride.. Part II
Previous Posts On This Topic: [One]
There’s something to be said about a political party (including its lineage of Reform, Alliance, Pre-PC PC, etc) that has been fighting gay marriage since its entrance into Canadian politics since its decriminalization forty years ago. I remember when a certain Rob Anders who spoke quite a bit about harming gay rights (and said that Nelson Mandela is a “communist and a terrorist”, if memory serves). And, of course, there’s the other, less interesting attacks on gays in Canada.
Still, though, do you remember my post last month on the gay pride parade that the Conservatives funded, and funded with a large news conference? Well, I wrote about how they were supposedly fuming. Now it seems to be growing and according to a thestar.com article.
“The TV shots of her with transvestites inflamed some people,” the source said.
Another Tory insider agreed the sight of drag queens with the minister caused Ablonczy “big-time” trouble because she had not cleared her attendance at the event with Harper’s office.
There is a clear indication that there are some issues that Harper needs to hash out with his party. The social conservative base is of fundamental importance to Harper and the Progressive Conservatives. It’s a tad bit of a worrisome situation for both him and his party at this moment. Very worrisome indeed.
So far the Minister for tourism, iane Ablonczy, has been gagged and is no longer allowed to talk to the public about handouts from the $190 million Marquee Tourism Events Program.
