Let’s Talk: The ad that everyone is talking about–
David Swann, leader of the Alberta Liberals, has tweeted the ad that was displayed on two whole pages in the Edmonton Journal and Calgary Herald. You can find it here.
It is transcribed below (yes, I took the time to write it out).
Lets Talk.
An Open Letter to Progressive Political Parties from the Alberta Liberal Party
On May 16, members of the Alberta Liberal Party voted in favour of closer cooperation with progressive parties across the province.
Our members voted this way because they saw a once-in-a-generation opportunity to unseat the Conservatives. An opportunity to build a progressive alternative. It is our hope that other progressive political parties share that desire, and will agree to work with us to achieve that goal.
We acknowledge that this means change. It means setting aside political hostility, and putting Albertan first. It means compromise, and finding a middle ground: a common thread from which we can weave a new political tapestry for Alberta. It requires an openness missing from politics in recent years.
As the party that formed Alberta’s very first provincial government and that has represented the Official Opposition since 1993, we believe we are uniquely positioned to take the first step towards this progressive movement.
What form cooperation will take, remains an open question that we hope to answer together. Ultimately, though, any agreement must be put to a vote of our membership.
We hope you will respond positively to this letter and agree to meet with us.
While we await your response, we will continue to offer Albertans a centrist alternative. We will promote moderate policies that lie between the two political extremes. We will seek out the best ideas and favour solutions for effective and fiscally responsible government. We will maintain our strong emphasis on liberal traditions of freedom and democracy.
Our instincts tell us Albertans are ready for a new approach to politics — an approach that emphasizes cooperation voer partisanship. This could be an [sic] historic turning point for our province. Courage is, as they say, the “power to let go of the familiar.”
Together we can build a better way forward for our province.

The NDP has tweeted that they are to respond by 2:30pm. This is in an hour from now.
Between then and now, though, how about you take a few moments to read some of my thoughts on the cooperation resolution and David Swann’s leadership?
- The document with the cooperation resolution inside.
- My post-convention post about the cooperation resolution and on the convention itself.
- Another post about the convention, with some small jabs pointed at my fellow bloggers
- An open letter to the Democratic Renewal Project and Liberals heading up the cooperation resolution
