Why I’ll never, ever vote Green
During one election when I was in highschool I volunteered for the Greens. It was a small commitment, it was only one night, and it, I believed, was for a cause. Reflecting on their policy document today I can only think that, if I had to chose again, I wouldn’t even consider donating either my money or my efforts to the Greens. They’re just too fringe and, I mean this with all seriousness, too crazy.
It fundamentally comes down to three things:
(1) They scaremonger on healthcare, nuclear issues, and other debates. One example that quickly comes to mind in their policy document is that their efforts to correlate rising cancer rates with rising use of drugs or medicines is flatly false.
(2) Their policies are being dictated by fringe groups. An example of this is that the Greens want to spend money on homeopathic voodoo medicine (Green Vision, pp. 71-74). They wish to spend our money on frivolous, non-scientific methods of healthcare. I cannot trust the Greens to rationally choose between fact and fiction.
(3) Their ardent anti-Nuclear stances (they’ll ”prohibit the export of fissionable nuclear material,” “Vigorously oppose the permitting of any new uranium mines and notify current uranium-permit holders of plans to phase out this industry in Canada, including exports,” and they’ll ”Work with provinces to phase out existing nuclear power, to stem the buildup of nuclear wastes, and to institute a Canada-wide moratorium on uranium mining and refining.”). Nuclear power has to be an option to realistically solve the climate crisis we are undergoing right now. Germany realizes this, France realizes this, and Japan realizes this. We need nuclear and we shouldn’t run from it. What we need is transparent and strong regulations on nuclear power, not rampant wanton fear mongering which the Greens are trying capitalize on.
Tonight is the debate. I feel May ought to be included in them–just like many others across our nation do. But, in all seriousness, when we come to May 2nd please don’t vote Green. This election is too important for that.
